Program for At-Risk Youth in Denton County is Transforming Lives

Denton County – The Denton County MHMR Center’s Multisystemic Therapy (MST) program is transforming the lives of Denton County’s at-risk youth and their families, providing a second chance for those facing some of the most challenging circumstances.

Denton County MHMR Center, My Health My Resources, the local behavioral health authority, has been instrumental in delivering the MST program since its launch in March 2023. This program helps keep youth safely at home, in school, or employed—preventing long-term trouble. MST tackles the root causes of delinquent and antisocial behavior through its intensive, evidence-based approach, empowering youth to build brighter futures while strengthening family and community support systems.

“My counselor was really cool—she helped a lot. She taught me how not to do things impulsively, to stop and think, and some breathing tricks when I get angry or frustrated. She really cared and wanted me to stay out of trouble.” — 13-year-old MST participant.

Multi-systemic Therapy is a collaborative effort between the Texas Health and Human Services Commission and the Denton County MHMR Center. The program is designed for youth aged 12 to 17 who are at risk of violent offenses, serious mental health or substance use concerns, or out-of-home placement. Unlike traditional Therapy, MST occurs in the home and community, ensuring interventions are practical, sustainable, and tailored to each youth and family’s needs. MST therapists work closely with caregivers and schools, equipping them with the tools to foster positive change long-term.

With a dedicated team of specially trained therapists, the MST program offers 24/7 support to families. Treatment typically lasts three to five months, during which therapists work intensively to provide structured supervision, enhance parenting skills, and strengthen youth resilience. The MST team includes a supervisor and three to four licensed therapists, ensuring families receive quality care and support.

In response to the Uvalde tragedy, legislative leadership allocated $4,725,000 to the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) in June 2022 to expand MST capacity across Texas. This funding established seven additional MST teams, including one in Denton County. With MST’s proven success in reducing youth criminal activity, substance abuse, and out-of-home placements, this expansion is critical in providing much-needed support to vulnerable youth and their families.

Since its implementation in Denton County, MST has made a measurable difference in the lives of at-risk youth. Ninety-five families have successfully completed the MST program since its inception at Denton County MHMR Center. Referrals are received from parents, juvenile probation, school counselors, DFPS staff, Center staff, and other social service organizations. MST has also delivered 30 community presentations in 2024. It is the only evidence-based treatment shown to reduce violent crime among adolescents, lowering rates by as much as 75%. These outcomes reflect the program’s effectiveness in helping young people overcome challenges and achieve long-term success.

“Having access to MST is a game changer for our students, parents, and me. The program allows families to access intensive Therapy from experienced counselors, making a real difference in our student’s lives.” — Alternative High School Counselor.

“That MST Program was amazing. The therapist not only helped him but supported our entire family. The best part was being able to call and reach a counselor anytime I needed advice when my son was struggling. I no longer felt alone.” — Parent of MST participant.

The impact of MST extends beyond the individual, fostering safer schools and stronger communities. By addressing the root causes of delinquent behavior and strengthening family structures, MST empowers youth to make better choices and avoid future involvement in the justice system.

“The MST program has been a vital partner in supporting our students and families. The positive effects on students’ behavior, motivation, and school success are undeniable.” — Alternative High School Principal.

The work being done in Denton County is a testament to the power of intervention and the profound impact that community-based support can have on young people’s lives. By investing in evidence-based solutions like MST, Denton County is changing individual trajectories and strengthening the entire community.
