Multisystemic Therapy (MST)

Multisystemic Therapy (MST) is an intensive family and community-based treatment that addresses severe behavior problems of youths aged 12 to 17 years old. These behaviors-such as physical aggression, verbal aggression, theft, noncompliance with family rules and expectations, leaving home without permission, substance use, running away, and more, are the main issues addressed. MST therapists go to the family’s home for 2 face-to-face 1-hour sessions per week, for a period of 3 to 5 months. The program focuses on teaching the caregivers new ways to react and respond when youth are having problematic behaviors. If a youth does not want to participate, the MST therapist can still provide services to the caregivers to assist in modifying the youth’s behaviors. In order to be accepted into the MST program, the youth must be residing in the family home during the length of the service. Caregivers must agree to 2 face-to- face appointments per week, for a 3-to-5-month period. To be considered for MST, an adult must fill out a referral form (link below). This may be completed by a parent, teacher, neighbor, police officer or any other adult. The family must be informed that an MST referral is being made. The MST Clinical Supervisor will review the referral, call the caregiver and referral source, and make a decision to determine if the youth meets acceptance criteria. There is no fee for this service. If a youth is needing psychiatric medications, they may see an MHMR provider at a sliding scale fee that is determined by the Consumer Benefits department of MHMR.
