Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)
Denton County MHMR Center offers free training on Youth, Adult and Teen Mental Health First Aid to populations defined under HB 2059. This is made possible through the Texas Schools Initiative Grant through the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. Some populations included under this grant are staff of ISD’s, Trade Schools, Private Schools, Charter Schools, Day Care Facilities, Licensed Peace Officers, Judges, Veterans, Teens in 9th-12th grade and Student Supporting Organizations.
The SAMHSA Training expansion grant covers the cost of training for any community member that wishes to attend a class. Please reach out for more information.
All participants that complete Mental Health First Aid training will receive a certificate from the training that is valid for 3 years. Most disciplines will accept MHFA as continuing education. Please contact your respective licensing entity for more information.
Registration is required. The class minimum is 5 participants, maximum is 30. Virtual and Blended Classes involve 2 hours of self-paced pre-work prior to attending an instructor-led course (Adult 5.5 Hours and Youth 4.5 Hours not including breaks and lunch).
All in-person classes vary in length. The Adult version is 8 hours and Youth is 6.5 Hours. Teen Courses can be three forty-five minute sessions or three 90 minute sessions.
Contact Phyllis Finley, MHFA Community Outreach Coordinator at mhfa@dentonmhmr.org for questions or more information.
MHFA is skills-based training that teaches people how to identify, understand and respond to signs and symptoms of a mental health or substance use challenge. Like physical First Aid and CPR, MHFA helps you assist someone experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis until professional assistance is obtained or the crisis is resolved.
Mental Health First Aiders learn a 5-step Action Plan to recognize warning signs of a mental health or substance use challenge, provide help in crisis and non-crisis situations, and understand where to turn for additional assistance.
The 5-step Action Plan (ALGEE) is: Assess and approach for risk of suicide or harm; listen nonjudgmentally; give reassurance and information; encourage appropriate professional help; and encourage self-help and other support strategies.
